In a decisive counterterrorism operation, Moroccan authorities have successfully apprehended an extremist individual in the northeastern city of Taourirt.

The suspect, a teacher from the village of Sidi Chafi, was arrested on January 15, 2025, based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) led the operation, which involved a coordinated effort with DGST special forces, the aerial brigade, and the Judicial Center of the Royal Gendarmerie. The suspect was found in possession of various chemical materials, including hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and zinc sulfate, believed to be intended for the manufacture of homemade explosives.

Authorities also seized edged weapons, mobile phones, and electronic devices during the search of the suspect’s residence. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect had been actively researching materials and techniques for making explosives, with the intention of orchestrating a terrorist attack aimed at causing mass harm and disrupting public order.

The suspect is currently in custody at the BCIJ, under the supervision of the terrorism prosecutor’s office, as investigations continue to uncover potential accomplices and further details regarding the planned attack.

This operation underscores Morocco's sustained efforts to combat terrorist threats and ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The successful apprehension of the suspect highlights the vigilance and dedication of Moroccan security forces in preventing extremist activities that could endanger the nation’s stability.
