Brussels, 16 May 2025 — The European Union has firmly reiterated the long-standing position that the EU and none of its Member States recognize the so-called "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic" (RASD), according to a statement by the EU official spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on Friday.

In response to a question about the next EU-African Union ministerial meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in Brussels, the spokesperson emphasized:
"Neither the European Union nor any of its Member States recognize the 'RASD'."
It is this reaffirmation in the context of there being more emphasis on the question of the Sahara in international diplomacy, particularly with the upcoming high-level meeting of the EU and the AU.
The statement explains that the EU has consistently remained firm on the matter, in line with United Nations resolutions and global legal conventions. It further reflects the EU's subtle diplomatic balancing act in maintaining cordial relations with Morocco as well as African Union members, some of whom, in fact, do recognize the proclaimed entity.
The EU clarification appears to preempt potential controversy or misunderstanding regarding the status of the participants in the forthcoming Brussels meeting, restating the bloc's stance on territorial integrity and international recognition.
