South Korea has officially endorsed Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara, recognizing it as a “serious and credible” framework for resolving the regional dispute.

In an official statement released on Friday, May 9, the South Korean government declared that it “welcomes serious and credible Moroccan efforts to move the process forward towards a resolution,” while reiterating its support for United Nations-led efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful and negotiated settlement.
The Moroccan Autonomy Plan—first introduced in 2007—proposes a system of self-governance for the Moroccan Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. It has steadily gained international traction, with more than 113 countries now supporting the initiative as the most realistic and viable path toward ending the decades-long dispute.
South Korea’s position also reflects the strong and expanding relationship between Rabat and Seoul. Since 2024, the two nations have engaged in multiple high-level exchanges, including visits by foreign ministers, parliamentary leaders, and business delegations. Bilateral trade reached approximately $550 million in 2024, highlighting a dynamic and growing economic partnership.
This endorsement marks a diplomatic milestone for Morocco and further consolidates international backing for its sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara. It also underscores South Korea’s commitment to promoting regional stability, constructive dialogue, and international law.
