Gambia backs Morocco’s Sahara Autonomy Initiative in diplomatic meeting

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, a high-level meeting took place in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation (MAECA-MRE), Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Gambian counterpart, Mr. Sering Modou Njie. The talks underscored the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations and reaffirmed shared positions on key regional issues.

In a joint communiqué issued following the meeting, the Republic of Gambia reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region. The Gambian delegation expressed clear endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as the sole viable solution to the longstanding dispute surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.
This reaffirmation of support highlights the continued international recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity and efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Sahara issue through dialogue and autonomy frameworks.
